Con el nombre de un caramelo que es dulce por dentro pero amargo por fuera Evan Dando dio nombre a su banda en Boston, por el lejano, 1986.
Sus primeros discos eran básicamente Punk adolescente, sin presagiar las influencias compositoras que amagaba su líder.
"Hate Your Friends", "Creator" y "Lick" forman parte de su primera trilogía. Notables discos pero impersonales a todas luces. Más tarde, Ben Deily abandona la banda. Dando, llamo a David Ryan para que tocara la batería y firmo con un sello más conocido, "Atlantic Records", que fue el que produjo su cuarto álbum, "Lovey", en 1990; mezclando Punk, Rock, Country, y algunos toques de Metal.
Cada vez las influencias mas Pop, Country o las mas alejadas del Punk afloraban en las composiciones de Evan.
En 1992 saldría a la luz "It's a shame about ray" 12 temas propios excelentes, cautivadores, tan redondos que son todos singles imprescindibles!. Por desgracia, la banda grabo un cover del "Mrs. Robinson" de los geniales Simon & Garfunkel. La mala suerte hizo que esta canción fuera un éxito y oscureciera todos sus temas propios.A pesar de que su siguiente disco el también notable "Come on feel the Lemonheads" es su disco mas vendido y recordado. Yo sigo pinchando muy a menudo "It's a shame about Ray" pues es un trabajo redondo, fresco y que logra dibujar una sonrisa en mi cara hasta en el día más negro.
Les basta, al ahora trió, con un escaso minuto y medio para demostrarnos con "Rockin Stroll" como lograr un tema con garra, pegadizo. Una canción POP con mayúsculas pero Pop del bueno del de los sesenta y setenta no la mierda actual. El mayor acierto de la canción es la aparición de un Hammond que sobrevuela sobre el tema dándole las pinceladas necesarias.
"Confetti" nos muestra a un desenfrenado Evan a la guitarra, su voz es dejada, arrastrada, imprecisa pero es lo que necesita su música. Con la canción que da nombre al disco logran el menos es más, simple en su estructura, y más simple en su interpretación, llegan a darte un puntapié en el corazón. Da rabia, lo vilipendiado que fue Evan y su banda, en plena fiebre Grunge. Y es que al lado de estos, ellos si componían canciones redondas y felices, al menos en apariencia. No necesitaban llenar a su música de una a veces afectada infelicidad y de capas de distorsión para cubrir sus limitadas capacidades compositivas. Evan tenia un pasado Punk, era un paria que abandono la Universidad por sus malas notas, le habían roto el corazón como a todos en la vida y también coqueteaba con la heroína. Pero una vez exploto todo quedo reducido a un ídolo Pop sin cerebro.
"Rudderless" es una composición en la que Evan nos muestra las cicatrices que tiene su alma. Pide perdón a una supuesta Ex-novia por su turbulento pasado. No siempre en la música hay que llenar las letras de floridas metáforas, hay veces que siendo directo llegas mas lejos y poéticamente es mas efectivo. El minutaje de las canciones es quizás lo único que mantienen de su pasado Punk siendo el tope los tres minutos y no llegando a los dos minutos muchas de ellas. "Buddy" logra llenar mis ojos de lágrimas, triste, con una cuidada instrumentación y una melodía de Evan perfecta, que se cuela en tu cerebro. Desde la primera vez que la oyes, tu vida cambiara irremediablemente. He de reconocer que estuve obsesionado con este álbum una eternidad. Aun a día de hoy me parece uno de los mejores discos de los 90's por delante de muchos otros que la critica ensalza. ¿Se puede bailar estando triste? ¿Se puede cantar riendo y llorando a la vez? ¿Se puede poguear en directo y sentirte solo en el mundo? Si, Si y Si… Para eso esta "The Purnpike down". Recuerdo el día que vi a Lemonheads en directo, como uno de esos conciertos, que en secreto van a significar mucho en tu vida. "Big part" es mas tremendismo envuelto en una pieza de orfebrería Pop de excelente factura, con un estribillo ideal para desgañitarte gritandolo en la ventana de esa Ex que te rompió el corazón…
"Alison's starting to happen" es un arrebato Punk, con un cambio de ritmo sublime, una melodía creada por un ser superior, y Dando da toda su alma en la interpretación vocal, Rabia adolescente sin olor a nada mas que a eso… Dolor puro y duro.
"Hannah & Gabi" es casi country mas tarde entenderíamos su fijación por el genial Gram Parsons. Si un músico no admira al Angel Caído de Gram no merece publicar un disco en su vida. Que se haga camionero y cante sus cancioncillas pseudometaleras en un Karaoke casero para el y sus grasientos amigos.
"Kitchen" es lo mas feliz que podemos ser en este mundo, percusiones endiabladas y una velocidad sonica para otro gran tema de los de Boston. "Ceiling fan in my spoon" relata de manera sutil los escarceos con la cuchara de Evan. Rabia, dolor, opresión y una tormentosa melodía en el tema mas duro del álbum. Ese tío esta sufriendo, ¿No lo ve nadie? no tienes que dedicarle un álbum entero a las drogas… Con un minuto y 48 segundos vemos lo jodido que estas.
"Frank Mills" trata sobre la familia y con una acústica y el golpeo en las pantorrillas como percusión, Los chicos se despiden. Mas tarde se añadió la Cover que hablamos antes y la verdad es que mejoran la original… ¿Que grupo es capaz de eso?

I remember the day I saw Lemonheads live like one of those concerts that secretly going to mean a lot in your life. "Big part" is more stark wrapped in a piece of pop craftsmanship of excellent, with a chorus desgañitarte ideal for shouting it in the window of the Ex who broke your heart ..."Alison's Starting To Happen" is an outburst Punk, with a change of pace sublime melody created by a higher being, and Dando gives his whole soul into the vocal, Rabia teenager without smell nothing but that ... pure pain and hard."Hannah & Gabi" is almost country later would understand his fixation on the great Gram Parsons. If a musician does not admire the Fallen Angel Gram deserves not released a record in his life.
