¿Puede la música sobrepasar los limites de las emociones? Este disco lo consigue. El álbum llego cuando el Grunge daba sus ya últimos coletazos y el britpop se adueñaba de gran parte del mundo, pero los integrantes del grupo a eso les daba igual y crearon uno de los mayores discos de la historia del rock. Cuatro músicos de diferentes bandas para crear un proyecto nuevo llamado "Mad Season", Layne Staley (vocalista de Alice in Chains), Mike McCready (guitarrista de Pearl Jam), Barrett Martin (batería de Screaming Trees) y John Baker Saunders (bajista de The Walkabouts). Hasta la fecha de hoy aquella epica formación solo formaron un disco llamado "Above". El sonido del grupo no fue una simple experimentación, es un disco marca de la casa de Seattle pero unido a muchisimos matices de los sesenta por lo que le da un sonido único.
El disco es un cocktail de dolor, melancolía con una gran dosis de drogas por las cuales estaban pasando todos los integrantes de la banda sobretodo Layne Staley, Mike McCready y John Baker Saunders.
El disco comienza con "Wake Up" uno de los temas que mas me han impactado en la historia, mas de 7 min de sonido hipnótico y envolvente que te lleva a la década de los sesenta y directamente ya nos mete en los mas pronfundo del disco sin darnos ningún tipo de opción a interpretar ni digerir, pasamos a ser la presa solo con los primeros acordes. La voz de Layne Staley parece que te asfixie en sus dolorosas frases y por una vez más gozas del sufrmiento acompañada de sonidos psicodelicos. "X-Ray Mind" da cancha al sonido de Mike y Barret, sobretodo la guitarra de Mike McCready aqui crea un nuevo estilo para él muy diferente al que estabamos acostumbrados de escucharle por aquellos tiempos con Pearl Jam, personalmente en este disco Mike McCready es donde saca su máximo potencial como genial guitarrista. "River Of Deceit" el single del disco y una de las mayores creaciones musicales de los 90's. La letra es tremendamente intimista por parte de Layne Staley, te enseña de todos esos momentos que sufria y compartia con las drogas, frases como "My pain is self-chosen" la tengo marcada a fuego dentro de mí para el resto de mis días. Cada palabra de la letra de la canción es una puñalada en el interior de quien la escucha. "I’m Above" es el titulo que da nombre al disco y que suena mas noventera con una voz de fondo inconfundible de Mark Lanegan, riffs y unos coros de voz con Layne que son perfectos. "Artificial Red" da la sensación que toda la banda creció escuchando la misma música y tienen las mismas raíces. Esas Raices no son otra cosa que el Blues. "Lifeless Dead" otra genialidad hecha canción, Mike McCready vuelve a enseñar sus habilidades con solos y sonidos caractericos que solo en este disco comparte. Y donde la voz de Layne Staley es la mas parecida a la de Alice In Chains. "I Don’t Know Anything" es el momento mas Hard Rock del disco, sonidos contundentes acompañadas con una bateria potente que se hace notar en toda la canción. "Long Gone Day" es una canción sencillamente bella en toda su composicion, sonidos tribales, contrabajo y saxo hacen un tema único y si pensamos que si ya es dificil que en un mismo disco tengamos 2 voces como las de Mark Lanegan y Layne Staley, tenerlas unidas en una misma canción es un orgasmo para los oídos. El disco termina con 2 Jams "November Hotel" y "All Alone" estas canciones son una mezcla de todo lo bien hecho del disco hasta ese momento, psicodelia, rock, eternos solos de guitarras y una voz de Layne Staley muy suave y descorazonada que termina diciendonos "All alone, we’re all alone", simplemente increible.
No voy a pararme a descubrir la voz de Layne Staley, pero en este disco es donde suena mas sincero ya no por sus letras continuamente destructivas, sino por su tono de desesperación que impregna la totalidad del disco.
Quien crea que Mad Season es una unión de Alice In Chains, Screaming Trees y Pearl Jam esta muy equivocado. Mad Season suenan a originalidad y algo único hasta la fecha de cuatro músicos que vivían momentos muy parecidos por esos tiempos.
Las drogas nos quitaron a Layne Staley y John Baker Saunders, pero sin ella tampoco tendríamos este disco que ya es parte de la inmortalidad por eso tengo el consuelo que siempre estarán vivos, al menos en mí.

Can music exceed the limits of emotions? This album succeeds. The album came when grunge was in its death throes and britpop and took possession of much of the world, but the members of the group that did not care and created one of the greatest albums in rock history. Four musicians from different bands to create a new project called "Mad Season", Layne Staley (Alice in Chains vocalist), Mike McCready (Pearl Jam guitarist), Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees drummer) and John Baker Saunders (bassist The Walkabouts). So far today that epic solo training formed a record called "Above". The band's sound was not a simple experiment, is a house brand disc Seattle but joined many nuances of the sixties by giving it a unique sound.
The disc is a cocktail of pain, melancholy with a large dose of drugs which were happening all band members especially Layne Staley, Mike McCready and John Baker Saunders.
The album begins with "Wake Up" one of the topics that have impacted me in history, more than 7 min hypnotic and surround sound that takes you to the sixties and directly and gets us into the most disk pronfundo without giving any option to interpret and digest, we become the prey only with the first chords. Layne Staley's voice seems to smother you in their sentences and painful again accompanied sufrmiento you enjoy the psychedelic sounds. "X-Ray Mind" gives the sound field and Mike Barret, especially Mike McCready's guitar here creates a new style for him very different than we were used to hear at that time with Pearl Jam, personally in this record is Mike McCready where he gets his full potential as a great guitarist. "River Of Deceit" the single from the album and one of the greatest musical creations of the 90's. The lyrics are extremely intimate by Layne Staley, teaches you to all those who suffered and shared moments with drugs, phrases like "My pain is self-chosen" I have seared the inside of me for the rest of my days. Every word of the lyrics of the song is a stab inside the listener. "I'm Above" is the title and title track that sounds more noventera with a distinctive background vocals of Mark Lanegan, riffs and voice choirs with Layne that are right. "Artificial Red" gives the feeling that the whole band grew up listening to the same music and have the same roots. These roots are not simply the Blues. "Lifeless Dead" genius made another song, Mike McCready returns to show his skills and sounds caractericos solos on this record that only shares. And where Layne Staley's voice is more like that of Alice In Chains. "I Do not Know Anything" is the most Hard Rock disc, sounds convincing accompanied with high capacity battery that is felt throughout the song. "Long Gone Day" is a simply beautiful song in all its composition, tribal sounds, bass and sax make a unique theme and if we think that if it is difficult for the same disc have two voices like those of Mark Lanegan and Layne Staley, keep them together in the same song is an orgasm for the ears. The disc ends with two Jams "November Hotel" and "All Alone" these songs are a mix of everything well done hitherto disk, psychedelia, rock, guitar solos eternal and Layne Staley's voice very soft and disheartened that ends by telling "All alone, We're All Alone", simply amazing.
I will not stand to discover the voice of Layne Staley, but this album is where it sounds sincere and not by their letters continuously destructive, but by his tone of despair that permeates the entire album.
Anyone who believes that Mad Season is a union of Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam and Screaming Trees are sadly mistaken. Mad Season sounding a problem unique to date of four musicians who lived very similar moments for those times.
Drugs took us to Layne Staley and John Baker Saunders, but without it we would not this record that is already part of immortality so I have the peace of mind will always be alive.
