Puedo decir que después de escuchar por primera vez lo nuevo de NIN me encuentro en una extraña encrucijada de sentimientos contradictorios, mi corazón siente algo diferente que mi cabeza y no hay nada peor que eso para uno que ama y vive la música como yo. La última vez que escuche algo nuevo de NIИ, Trent había sacado un disco gratuito que se descargaba en Internet y que había sido irónicamente titulado The Slip. El consenso general de la mayoría de la gente parece ser que este disco había sido decepcionante y bastante que desear. Trent después de ese álbum se tomó un tiempo para hacer música de bandas sonoras de peliculas, lo cual Trent hizo un trabajo sorprendentemente extraordinario. Este es sin duda uno de los álbumes y de los proyectos musicales más singulares que provienen de la discografía de NIИ (y no me estoy olvidando de Ghosts I–IV cuando hago esta afirmación). Trent ha perdido gran parte de los aspectos caracteristicos que mucha gente lo veneraba, como esos estados de angustia, de nervio, de rábia y de desaprobación social en su batalla particular en la industria. Esto no debería ser una sorpresa en principio, teniendo en cuenta la dirección en la que ha estado viajando desde el álbum Year Zero, ya que cada vez a ido un paso mas alla para ser más electrónico y menos "Rockero". Lo que podría ser una sorpresa para los oyentes es hasta qué punto prevalece el papel los años 80 y de los años 90? Bien, los sonidos son en muchos aspectos, un retroceso a los principios de NIИ, con la-composición musical de sintetizadores de bits prehistóricos, .Trent siempre ha tenido una debilidad por la producción de estilo 80's, vamos a ser completamente honestos con nosotros mismos, Reznor ha hecho de este álbum el escaparate y la vanguardia del sonido que nadie quería en esta ocasión. Tristemente creo que está bastante claro que Trent quiere ser percibido por los oyentes de una manera diferente. Él ya no desea ser identificado como el angustioso y torturado Reznor vestido de negro, de pelo largo, adicto a las drogas y al sexo de los años 90 y 00 del que nos dio álbumes de la talla de Fragile o The Downward Spiral. Letras emocionales, y agresividad en los sonidos synth han quedado como tiempos pasados y nunca mas volveran a ocurrir. Incluso ya fue lejos como para poner casi 2 horas de duración el álbum ambient que él llama Ghosts. Era esto un esfuerzo por entrar en el Post Rock y la escena instrumental para estar al lado de artistas como Aphex Twin o Boards of Canada? A pesar de su pretensión, tenía algunas joyas que brillaban  ocultas dentro en forma de piano. Esta es posiblemente la producción más electrónica que hemos oído de NIИ.  
Las canciones son en su mayor parte pegadizas, sorprendentemente optimistas e impulsadas por una fácil digestión, extrañamente todo lo contrario a lo que nos tenia acostumbrado. "Came Back Haunted" es inmensamente envolvente y agradable de escuchar pero nos hace recordar tiempos de The Fragile, por lo que no deja de ser una especie de refrito.  "All Time Low" es nada menos que una obra maestra? Pues NO, me parece un engaño de canción lo siento, que coño hace cantando Reznor como si fuera Damon Albarn de Gorillaz? con esos falsetes, en fin, esta canción no tiene perdón. Por suerte hay temas que nos hace olvidar lo ocurrido y más relajantes y atmosféricas, como "Find My Way" y "Various Methods of Escape" o las excesivamente electrónicas y casi tribales  "While I'm Still Here/Black Noise". "Disappointed" es un tema que puede parecer que tiene un efecto vocal de ahogadomiento, pero entra en su propio elemento a medida que avanza, eso si, el coro nos mata por aburrimiento y en desinterés, sin un momento atractivo. Ahora vamos a discutir por "Satellite" Cuáles son las dos palabras que digo  acertadas en esta opinión? Pop y funk? "Satellite" encarna ese pop y el funk para fusionarlos y que asienten con calzador, mantienendolos a base de efectos electrónicos distorsionados para que impidan ser fácil escuchados. Volvemos a lo mismo, no quiero pensar que esto haya sido hecho intencionadamente, me niego, no quiero un álbum de NIN suene a Postal Service, quiero un álbum de NIИ que suene a NIИ. Es como una reminiscencia de ritmos de Echoplex, si bien la diseccionas y solo ves la música que combina es simple maestría, pero no intentes unir lo que transmite con lo que realmente es, solo son sonidos de efectos de producción característicos de música industrial, con vueltas de tuercas de principios de NIN o KMFDM. No tengo mucho más sentimiento positivo hacia este álbum, pero quiero seguir adelante e identificar algunos de los problemas a medida que se me hicieron evidentes para mí. Líricamente hablando, Reznor no me ha parecido que madurara excesivamente, las letras suenan muy similares a todo lo que él ha escrito anteriormente, por ejemplo, en la línea de: "I have something you need to see ... They put something in me". Otro caso es en el ejemplo de la cancion 'Find My Way ', Trent canta: "We're never going to die. How did we get so high?" Si bien estas son terriblemente letras geniales y bastante significativas, contienen un doble mensaje, pero hay que preguntarse, NIN lo a hecho para darnos a entender que todavia son ellos dentro de su descalabro o para provocar? Ciertamente no lo se y es la duda con la que me quedo, Reznor todavía tiene para ofrecer o no quiere hacerlo?. Incluso mientras Reznor canta algunas de estas letras inspiradas , apenas son la pieza central de la música que está sonando. Por mi parte, estoy demasiado ocupado siendo torturado por sonidos que me importan mas bien poco. Me cuesta entender cual a sido la producción final de este álbum, quizás dentro de cientos de escuchas pueda decir que estoy delante de una obra maestra incomprendida. Pero mis pensamientos finales de momento no lo son, Trent visualiza y conquista el darnos algo nuevo pero en forma de retroceso a los NIN de antaño. Buen trabajo Trent si tu intención era hacer música electrónica, pero mal trabajo Trent si tu intención era hacer un álbum de NIИ. Me quedo con "In Two" y "Find my Way" y algún destello mas por ahí perdido, pero poco más.

Debo confesar que descubrí a la banda de Trent Reznor con su segundo largo. "Pretty hate machine" para mi no existía. Cuando más tarde llegue a el me pareció muy inferior a su gran obra, "Downward Spiral" este es y seguirá siendo su obra maestra. Es más a día de hoy ese primer disco me suena antiguo, desfasado y con algunos samplers y/o arreglos sonrojantes. Más propios de la música techno de Detroit que de la oscuridad industrial que vino después. Reznor se sitúa en la cúspide y en pleno delirio de grandeza sin contar Ep's y remixes nos ofrece su proyecto más ambicioso. "The Fragile" es un doble disco que de haber sido sencillo hubiera rozado de nuevo la excelencia pero no fue así… Tras esto discos aceptables con picos de genialidad más en "Year Zero" que en "With Teeth". Por desgracia se cruzo el director de cine David Fincher en su vida y Hollywood, los Oscars y bandas sonoras intrascendentes. Discos que podías bajarte por internet que eran una perdida de espacio en tu disco duro. De golpe y de la nada anuncia un nuevo trabajo, con una formación de NIN atractiva y ahora con el disco a punto de salir os comento mis sensaciones… Se han filtrado 3 temas y…De principio te dejan frío, con la sensación de ya haberlo escuchado antes, esa terrible sensación de deja vu se vuelve en irritación sobretodo con la discotequera "Copy of A". Lo siento pero ese truco no se lo paso. Es mala con avaricia, ni siquiera un marinero inflado a pastos disfruta de una canción tan simple. No le habrá llevado más de diez minutos parirla. Unos 5 que diría el gran Liam Gallagher. El resto del disco nos descubre a un susurrante Reznor, más cerca de Massive Attack de lo deseable. Melodías que harán las delicias de las fans de "Crepusculo" si eres adolescente y serán la banda sonora ideal de las treintañeras fans de Las sombras de Grey cuando tengan el día malote y quieran recibir unos azotes. "Find my way" es una prueba de ello, seguro que dentro de nada el canal "Divinity" anuncia sus contenidos con este engendro de fondo. Quizás penséis que soy muy duro pero escuchar "All time low" sin sufrir arcadas y mareos es imposible si hasta los jodidos Muse le ponen más agallas… "Dissapointed" me crispa me dan ganas de volar hasta Usa y correrlo a gorrazos, el truco del ruidito ya esta muy trillado, y la canción es como el resto floja, floja. "Everything" suena a Taylor Swift intentando sonar a Foo Fighters pero tocada por una banda de treceañeros en un garaje perdido de Arkansas. "Satellite" es la guinda, seguramente escucho mi alarma del móvil y le doy por hacer un remita que no le llevara más de 4 minutos componerlo. "I would for you" suena como si cogieras un sampler de Kurt Cobain susurrando una canción infantil a tope de heroína y le pusieras música con un par de Casios de los ochenta. Los temas se suceden y tu ira va en aumento, por mucho que intentes borrarlo de tu mente este disco existe, no es una pesadilla. Que lejos queda Woodstock amigo Trent. Vuelve a hacer música de mierda con tu amiguito de Atticus, Pon música a videojuegos o a películas de Disney pero por favor no publiques nada más bajo el nombre de Nine Inch Nails.

Objetivamente hablando, las probabilidades de que la gente conozca mis inquietudes religiosas son mas bien nulas. Solo para aclarar la situación, ni hice en su día la comunión ni voy a misa, asi que espero que os hagáis hecho una idea. Sin embargo, no tengo miedo a admitir que de vez en cuando estoy golpeado por la repentina duda de la existencia, cuando la idea me golpea tal vez es cuando pienso donde iré después de la muerte o mi desaparición a la nada, sólo tal vez, pienso en el purgatorio por no haber sido considerado en ninguna creencia antes de mi muerte, se de sobra que voy a tener que pasar la eternidad castigado por mi falta de fe. Creo que eso es bastante comprensible, por así decirlo, aunque yo diría que el sufrimiento permanente es un punto a favor a cualquiera que vaya a ser juzgado. Sin embargo, es preciso decir que el verdadero sufrimiento sólo se puede encontrar después de la muerte, es cuando te das cuenta de que toda premisa sobre la vida esta mal infundada, cuantos errores y preocupaciones estupidas durante este viaje que nos lleva a todos a ninguna parte. Mientras que algunas personas seguramente insisten en discrepar. Esto se debe a que The Downward Spiral es más que un álbum, es capaz de ser considerado como un hijo fecundado a traves de expulsiones de visceras y dolor. Es una declaración sobre la tortura personal de cada persona. La realización del álbum con Trent Reznor como lider indescutible de la criatura, fue la de un estudio en la casa californiana donde Charles Manson y su pandilla de lunáticos seguidores asesinaron brutalmente a Sharon Tate y su grupo de amigos. Es difícil pensar realmente en una escena más propicia para la grabación de The Downward Spiral que la casa de uno de los asesinatos más notorios de toda la historia. Lo que si es cierto es que hay algo visceral y fascinante en este álbum, debido al hecho de que suena como el equivalente a una persona que a ido acumulando durante una gran tapa de su vida emociones y sentimientos para que acaben destrozados al chocar violentamente contra una pared tan fuerte como sea posible.
A pesar del hecho de que The Downward Spiral alcanzó el número 2 en las listas de Billboard, también es un álbum conceptual, llevandote a un viaje a través de la autodestrucción del hombre, con todas las metáforas de la sociedad actual contadas en historias de 4 a 5 minutos de duración. Aunque Reznor canta constantemente en primera persona, es difícil evitar la impresión de que él mismo se ha elegido para el papel de martir de la historia en nombre de una humanidad condenada. Como sugiere el nombre del álbum, la historia cuenta el descenso en espiral de un hombre culminado en el camino en su eventual muerte y su reflexión sobre ella desde el más allá. Si bien la marca identificativa de Nine Inch Nails siempre han sido siempre sus fuertes ráfagas explosivas de ruido combinados con suaves texturas de ambiente, aquí todo el disco está impregnado de una sensación de miedo y amenaza de otro mundo, que a veces parece como si Reznor estuviera cerca de una gran implosión por culpa de sus intensas emociones personales. Asi es como comienza esta andadura con Sr.Self Destruct, con el sonido de un hombre torturado, retratandose en sí mismo como débil y condenado, y que termina con una lluvia de ruido electrónico, que marca el inicio de la pesimista y cínica Piggy. Luego está March Of The Pigs, que ha sido descrita como la "canción más furiosa" Apertura con una simple batería y gritos de rabia de Reznor contra la sociedad, de la que promete (I want to watch it all come down) "Quiero ver como todo se viene abajo" es reflejado por una rotura de piano en el que susurra (Take the skin and peel it back, now doesn't it make you feel better?) En pocas palabras, es la realidad deprimente y horrible actual que nos está tocando vivir. Eso es lo que da constancia e incrementa su poder. "Closer" manifiesta que dentro de Nine Inch Nails, Reznor puede llegar a ser la criatura más abierta, que necesariamente tiene que vivir bajo el legado de un seudónimo para poder condensar sus pensamientos y vivencias.
Siempre he odiado y he denunciado a esas pseudobandas que expresan sus emociones como composiciones, creando una imagen falsa de nuevos idolos con el unico objetivo de atraer a un público adolescente. Bueno, (siempre se ha hecho, pero ahora tiene menos creadibilidad) pero si tuviera que escoger a un artista que podría ser etiquetado como esa pega seria la decision de elegir entre Trent Reznor y Layne Staley. Rara vez se ve de todo menos alegria en las letras, Reznor es un tipo que atrae a ese cartel de jóvenes descontentos de todo el mundo. Si me atrajo a mi en la adolescencia que yo siempre me despegaba de todo movimiento social y cultural para no ser una oveja mas del rebaño, que será de ese adolescente perdido sin personalidad e influenciable? A pesar de esto, las letras están lejos de ser sutiles: "I do not want this" and "do not tell me how I feel", se repite una y otra vez en la pieza central del álbum. Aunque la letra es audaz e inconfundible, sin embargo, también constituye una parte esencial de la inteligencia de este álbum. Aunque en un principio puede parecer un grito crudo sobre todo, The Downward Spiral tiene un mensaje extrañamente poderoso que nos entrega. Después "Ruiner", donde se hace evidente que Reznor ha rechazado a Dios de una vez por todas, se queda con dos opciones, amar u odiar. "A Warm Place" está a kilómetros de distancia de la histeria de los latidos de "Big Man With A Gun", siendo influenciada por Brian Eno. Es un tema puramente instrumental, ambient, y que lleva al oyente del abismo en el que te reflejas con tu propia alma en un agujero profundo. Magnífica en su simplicidad, se plantea en voz baja la historia a mirarse a sí mismo y tratar de descubrir cómo se llega donde está uno hoy con todas sus penurias y traumas, esta llena de espiritualidad aceptada, a pesar de su efecto previsto es bastante diferente a lo que finalmente nos viene a continuacion con "Eraser", cuenta con un regreso a la música palpitante que conduce a un lugar cálido, con Reznor predicando "I hate, I crush, I erase, kill me", de tal manera que se hace evidente que la historia de The Downward Spiral no tendrá un final feliz, y la única pregunta que queda es si el uno será destruido por su propia mano o por la mano de alguien que ya ha rechazado. Irónicamente, el último paso en el camino al suicidio del personaje viene en "Reptile", cuando se toma la decisión de visitar a una prostituta y se tiene la importancia de esta reunión, y se ponen de relieve los sonidos de una maquinaria en movimiento en el fondo, como haciendote ver que se consume el acto sexual, solo sexo, sin amor, sin pasión, solo instinto primitivo. El simbolismo es claro: no existe una relación aquí, sólo una reacción mecanizada, lo que ha sucedido con otros hombres antes es lo mismo que ocurre en este momento conmigo, y volverá a pasar de nuevo (No existe nada con pasión ni el propio amor existe). Las letras respaldan esto, en las líneas "who has the blood of reptile just underneath the skin, other thousand seeds dripping from inside...oh my fucking beautiful." Después de lanzar una súplica desesperada final para la redención visitando el único tipo de hombre con el que todavía se puede identificar, el personaje central queda rechazado más por la humanidad, lo que lleva a la inevitable  espiral descendente. ·The Downward Spiral" es la penúltima canción y debería por derechos ser la última canción del álbum. Cuenta la historia del suicidio del hombre,  (véase como tercera persona), mientras los gritos de Reznor juzgan en un bucle en el fondo. Sorprendentemente, sin embargo, el suicidio del personaje, es de imaginar que es el evento más importante aquí, está completamente eclipsado por lo que ocurre a continuación.¿Hay alguien aquí que no tiene conocimiento de la canción Hurt? Conocidisima cover realizada por Johnny Cash cuando estaba en su muerte mas inminente, la canción es el mayor himno del suicidio, con el carácter de Reznor mirando hacia atrás en su vida sobre una capa suave de ambiente y guitarras acústicas. La cantidad de simbolismo contenido en las letras aquí es tremendamente excepcional, resume todo el concepto del álbum en una canción de 6 minutos. Al referirse a su "corona de mierda" (creo que en la version de cash se refiere a su corona de espinas, en su vida en tal caso), la reflexión sobre la forma que lo hace pone los pelos de punta. Trágicamente, sólo después de la muerte, es cuando te das cuenta en las últimas líneas del álbum tratan de pedir otra oportunidad, y que sería capaz de salvarte a tí mismo de todo lo que ha ocurrido, pero para entonces, como suele ocurrir una vez has muerto todo es demasiado tarde. Distorsionados sonidos de guitarras que se extienden por lo que parece una eternidad, y, así, el alma es cuando ya se esfuma,  y con ella la historia de The Downward Spiral.

La gente que esté familiarizada con el álbum será consciente de todo lo que explicado a la largo de esta extensa reseña sobre los sentimientos y emociones que crea. Por razones de espacio, era inevitable contar. Nine Inch Nails tienen una reputación, y no hacen música de estereotipo, ellos son el estereotipo, incluso en la música que suena básica tiene capas ocultas de complejidad. Infierno, herejía, ademas del filósofo alemán Friedrich Nietzsche es citado en el grito de "Dios ha muerto", que resulta ser la gran baza importante del álbum de Reznor. ¿Es la marca es de un letrista estúpido? Más bien creo que no. Despite the fact that The Downward Spiral reached number 2 in the Billboard charts, it is also a concept album, taking you on a journey through the self-destruction of man, with all the metaphors of the stories told in society 4 to 5 minutes in length. Although Reznor constantly sings in the first person, it is difficult to avoid the impression that he was chosen for the role of martyr of history in the name of humanity doomed. As suggested by the name of the album, the story is the downward spiral of a man on the road culminating in his eventual death and its reflection on her from the afterlife. Then there's March Of The Pigs, which has been described as the "angry song" Opening with simple battery and Reznor screams of rage against society, which promises (I want to watch it all come down) "I want to see as everything falls apart "is reflected by a broken piano on which whispers (Take the skin and peel it back, now does not it make you feel better?) Distorted guitar sounds that span what seems an eternity, and thus the soul is when it disappears, and with it the history of The Downward Spiral.
People who are familiar with the album will be aware of everything explained to throughout this extensive review on the feelings and emotions it creates. Hablar de Trent Reznor no es solo es hablar del Reznor de los años 90s, él ha existido desde los años 80, ganando popularidad cada vez mayor con cada álbum, EP, o remix. A través de las riendas como rey y amo del Metal Industrial, Nine Inch Nails han ido cambiado drásticamente el registro de su sonido. Hacia el final de los años 80, Reznor lanzó Pretty Hate Machine, un inquietante álbum underground con una trama de hits basados en la electrónica. Con los años 80s los sintetizadores se usaron ​​en exceso con ritmos programados, las letras distorsionadas sobre la tortura y la dominación no podían ser tomada en serio, les faltaba ese punto de crudeza que la música mas rock o metal ofrecia sin contemplaciones. La realización de este EP fue 1992,  33 minutos esenciales para la colección de Nine Inch Nails, a pesar de su poco reconocimiento, contiene de los mejores temas jamas realizados por Reznor. Lleno de riffs pegadizos, Broken es la transición perfecta de los años 80 electrónicos a los años 90 oscuros.
El riff distorsionado de Pinion se retira para dejar espacio al ritmo de Wish, con una voz programada dejando espacio al final de cada línea de riffs metálicos. Todo esto culmina en un coro de metal fuerte, pero pegadizo. El resto de la canción sigue un similar patrón de verso y estribillo, incorporando guitarras eléctricas en los versos haciendo presagio de lo que vendría con The Downward Spiral. La canción termina siendo un clásico de Nine Inch Nails, llegando del ruido a la deserción durante 3 ó 4 segundos de silencio. Last utiliza un riff más lento pero más retorcido para emitir más sonidos. El riff principal suena como un cruce entre los Nine Inch Nails de los 80s y el sonido de The Downward Spiral. En definitiva, una canción de metal buena para unir las dos sonidos de Nine Inch Nails. Help Me I Am In Hell es como un instrumento melódico que suena muy parecido a lo que seria con The Fragile. Help Me I Am In Hell es un momento poco agradable para tomar una bocanada de aire fresco antes de las últimas cuatro canciones te golpeen para quitarte el aire que te queda. Happiness in Slavery para mi es una de las peores canciones del álbum. La canción comienza desprovista de toda forma de melodía, dejando que se concentre solamente en gritos de "Happiness in Slavery". Una vez que la canción finalmente suaviza un poco es para darle algún tipo de verso a la melodía, Trent Reznor lanzó una campaña para promover un poco el mundo del sado-masoquismo, que por cierto el videoclip fue censurado en sus dias por sus imagenes de extrema violencia. No es la mejor canción, pero es soportable. Gave Up tiene una introducción de un minuto de batería, Gave Up tiene explosiones de riffs de guitarras, antes que vuelvan a un verso más tranquilo. Aunque el sonido es tranquilo, la batería te machaca, las letras siguen siendo gritos, y las guitarras siguen siendo omnipresentes, lo que indica que en ningún momento Trent bajará el volumen  del mezclador, es una ducha de distorsiones. La canción va repitiendo los riffs fuertes antes de desaparzca en literalmente 91 segundos de silencio...Physical (You're so) viene después de 91 temas de nada, el primero de los dos temas extra proporciona una melodía pegadiza cruda, chorreando insinuaciones sexuales y un estribillo que puede permanecer en la cabeza para toda tu vida. "You're too physical to me" ya es parte de mi recuerdo. Suck... solo digo que el álbum podría haber sido mejor sin esta canción para acabarlo. Tener dos bonus tracks en un EP en primer lugar es una exageración, pero cuando la segunda no es buena, empeora aún las cosas. Suck es una cancion esquizofrénica que alterna entre los peores sonidos del Pretty Hate Machine y  el techno metal y genéricos riffs metálicos de los 90s. Physical (You're so) podría haber sido un final perfecto para el EP, pero hasta genios como Trent Reznor a veces se equivocan.

The main riff sounds like a cross between Nine Inch Nails from the 80s and the sound of The Downward Spiral. In short, a good metal song to join the two sounds of Nine Inch Nails. Help Me I Am In Hell is like a melodic instrument that sounds like it would be with The Fragile. Help Me I Am In Hell is a nice little moment to take a breath of fresh air before the last four songs hit you and take away the air you have left. Happiness in Slavery for me is one of the worst songs on the album. The song begins devoid of any form of tune, leaving you to concentrate only cries of "Happiness in Slavery". Once the song is finally softens a bit to give some kind of verse to the melody, Trent Reznor launched a campaign to promote a little world of sado-masochism, which by the way the video was censored in his day for his images of extreme violence. Not the best song, but it's bearable. Gave Up has a one-minute introduction of battery explosions Gave Up has guitar riffs, before returning to a quieter verse. Although the sound is quiet, battery crushes you, the letters are still screaming, and the guitars are still ubiquitous, indicating that at no time Trent lowers volume mixer, is a shower of distortions. The song repeats the strong riffs before desaparzca in literally 91 seconds of silence ... Physical (You're so) comes after 91 issues in all, the first of the two bonus tracks provides a catchy tune crude sexual innuendo dripping and a refrain that can stay in your head for a lifetime.
