Pensando en esto por un segundo, creo que debería escribir un ensayo acerca de cómo de alguna manera Nirvana arruinó la escena underground americana, la mayoría debe estar diciendo pero que dice este loco!! como el grupo que saco la musica underground del ostracismo pudo llevarla a la ruina?, no se me mal interprete, pero los rápidos cazatalentos y el estrellato prematuro fué el grunge una ruina para bandas que podrían habernos dado mucho mas de si, tambien es cierto que seguramente entonces no estaría hablando de Babes In Toyland ni hubieramos conocido el 90% de los 90s, pero las cosas son como son, y creo que una parte fue así. Los años ochenta y finales de los primeros noventa salieron todo tipo de bandas realmente sorprendentes del underground yankee. Nuevas bandas que eran verdaderamente importantes, bandas como Mudhoney, Bikini Kill, Dig, etc, etc. El legado del grunge fue de una forma de llegar al estrellato rápido para muchas de estas bandas firmando con los principales sellos discográficos y ganando dinero a espuertas, pero tambien fue una forma de lapidarse musicalmente. Me vengo a referir como ejemplo para esta vez a las riotgrrrl Babes In Toyland, ellas se movian en torno a 1994/1995 cuando la carrera de las Babes llego al ocaso. Lanzaron un álbum de estudio decepcionante (Nemesisters), y eso fue todo. No hay muchas personas que sepan algo nuevo de la banda en la actualidad o quizás solo sea yo el ignorante y no se nada. Mucha gente sabe la gran historia acerca de Courtney Love y Hole. Pero uno se está preguntando ¿que tiene que ver Courtney con todo esto? Bueno, Courtney Love y Kat Bjelland estuvieron una vez en la misma banda juntas alrededor de mediados de los ochenta. Los rumores han abundado lo largo de los años en cuanto a quién inspiró a quién. Si escuchas 'Spanking Machine', lanzado un año antes de la liberación del álbum debut de Hole a uno le debe resolver todas las dudas, imagino que con eso lo digo todo. 'Spanking Machine' es más intenso, más audible, mas inquietante y mucho más emocionante todo al mismo tiempo que cualquier álbum de Hole podría soñar serlo. Este es el verdadero negocio, unos abren el camino para que los que vienen detras se lleven lo sembrado.
Aunque no fue por esa época de fechas exactas del lanzamiento original, tuve la suerte de conseguir Spanking Machine unos años mas tarde en una desconocida tienda de discos de Barcelona. Parecía que había tal afluencia de
grandes bandas nuevas que aunque desconocía por completo a la banda, uno sabía que lo que se llevaba era una pequeña joya en bruto. A día de hoy te das cuenta que grupos como Babes In Toyland serían en realidad los grupos que se elevarían en las mejores listas de grupos alternativos actuales, aunque hoy en día que significa alternativo? es una palabra que se a comercializado tantisimo desde hace 20 años que a perdido el significado que implica ser eso. Babes
In Toyland con su "Spanking Machine a proyectado una larga sombra a traves de estos años sobre el garage
rock sucio, comercializando gran parte de las producciones de grupos como The Hives, The White Stripes, The Strokes,
etc, etc.Spanking Machine es un álbum con un sonido de batería formidable, sonidos tribales y tan fuerte que parece mentira que sea un grupo de "Chicas". El bajo se suma a la profundidad requerida. Kat canta y toca la guitarra. La guitarra aunque a menudo es bastante extraña esta entre la oscuridad y la agresión que muchas de las canciones crea. Entonces, tenemos la voz de Kat en plenitud. Bueno, yo casi nunca había escuchado una voz tan potente en los gritos procedentes de una vocalista femenina en toda mi jodida vida!. Aquí pasamos de un susurro a un grito, en cuestión de segundos. Tales
contrastes era lo que esta banda se destinguia de bandas con vocaclistas femeninas, llevaron los primeros críticos
de Babes In Toyland a compararlas con The Birthday Party (Nick Cave, Mick
Harvey, Tracy Pew, etc, etc) ya saben esa banda postpunk, y que en su contexto es una comparación de lo mas válida. Lejos
de ser cosa del 'Riot Grrl', 'Spanking Machine' es crudo, fuerte,
emocionante, oscuro y lo más importante, te hara pensar que los gritos causarán gotas de sangre que derraman
de tu equipo de música a
través de tu piso, etc... Sin embargo, hay casi una hermosura
perversa en algunas de las líneas de guitarra de algunas canciones. Es una sensación rara y no es algo que pueda describir. Una canción como 'Vomit Heart "tiene una voz emocionante por parte de Kat y bastante sorprendente en el sonido de la batería. Lori en la batería, canta una canción en lugar de Kat, en 'Dogg'. Sin embargo, hay algo tan real que suena sobre la canción que me hipnotiza y su voz valiente realmente trae el canto a la vida, como si de una ninfa del bosque se tratara. En verdad, mencionar tan sólo algunos puntos destacados de este álbum es verdaderamente hacerle una injusticia. Sólo
quiero dejar claro que esto no es un disco que va a entrar fácilmente a una primera escucha, pero espero que sea un disco que esté en tu discografía. "Lashes"
y "Dust Cake Boy 'son canciones de la que yo nunca dejaré de escuchar.
Thinking about this for a second, I should write an essay about how Nirvana somehow ruined the American underground scene, most should be saying, but it says this crazy! as the group bag ostracism underground music could bring to ruin?, do not misunderstand me, but rapid scouts and early stardom was a wreck for the grunge bands that could have given us much more than if it is also true then surely would not be talking of Babes In Toyland and 90% had known the 90s, but things are as they are, and I think that part was not. The late eighties and early nineties bands out all kinds of really amazing the yankee underground. New bands that were truly important bands like Mudhoney, Bikini Kill, Dig, etc, etc.. The legacy of grunge was a way to get quickly to stardom for many of these bands signing to major labels and making great money, but it was also a form of lapidarse musically. I come to refer to as an example for this time to riotgrrrl Babes In Toyland, movian them around 1994/1995 when the race of the Babes arrived at sunset. They released a studio album disappointing (Nemesisters), and that was it. There are not many people who know something new about the band now or maybe just be me ignorant and know nothing. Many people know the great story about Courtney Love and Hole. But you are wondering what Courtney has to do with anything? Well, Courtney Love and Kat Bjelland were once in the same band together around the mid-eighties. Rumors have abounded over the years as to who inspired whom. If you listen to 'Spanking Machine', released a year before the release of Hole's debut album one would be resolve all doubts, imagine that Enough said. 'Spanking Machine' is more intense, more audible, more disturbing and more exciting all at the same time as any album Hole could dream to be. This is the real deal, some open the way for those coming behind him carried sown.
Although it was by the time of the original release exact dates, I was lucky to get Spanking Machine a few years later in an obscure record store in Barcelona. It seemed that there were so many great new bands that although completely unknown to the band, you knew what it took was a little gem in the rough. Today you realize that groups like Babes In Toyland would actually rise by groups that the best current alternative group lists, although nowadays alternative means? is a word that was marketed like hell for 20 years who has lost the meaning involved in being that. Babes In Toyland with his "Spanking Machine to cast a long shadow through the years on the dirty garage rock, selling many of the productions of bands like The Hives, The White Stripes, The Strokes, etc. Machine is etc.Spanking an album with a drum sound formidable and tribal sounds so strong that it seems incredible that a group of "girls." Low adds to the required depth. Kat sings and plays guitar. though often guitar is quite strange this between darkness and aggression that many of the songs created. then have Kat's voice fully. Well, I almost never heard a voice so powerful in the screams from a female vocalist in my entire fucking life!. Here we go from a whisper to a scream, in seconds. Such contrasts was what this band is destinguia vocaclistas bands with female, took the first critics of Babes In Toyland's compare The Birthday Party (Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Tracy Pew, etc, etc) and know that postpunk band, and in context it is a more valid comparison. Far from being a thing of 'Riot Grrl', 'Spanking Machine' is raw, loud, exciting, dark and More importantly, will make you think that the cries cause drops of blood spilled from your home stereo through your floor, etc ... However, there is almost a perverse beauty in some of the guitar lines of some songs.'s a strange feeling and not something you can describe. A song like 'Vomit Heart "has a thrilling voice by Kat and quite surprising in the drum sound. Lori on drums, sing a song instead of Kat in 'Dogg'. However, there is something so real it sounds on the song and his voice hypnotizes me brave really brings the song to life, like a wood nymph is involved. Indeed, mention just a few highlights of this album is truly him an injustice. I just want to make clear that this is not an album that will easily get a first listen, but I hope it's a disc that is in your discography. "Lashes" and "Dust Cake Boy 'are songs I'll never stop listening.
