El pasado 20 de octubre en la sala la Bascula debutaron en directo Garlic Soup. Surgidos de las cenizas de Messala, o mejor dicho, tras quedar en Stand by al perder a su bajista y no encontrar un sustituto de garantías. La casualidad o el destino les hace probar suerte con Mario Benesenes Voz y guitarra de The Mythes. La química funciona y los cuatro miembros, cambios de instrumentos incluidos, pasan a denominarse Garlic Soup. En ese primer ensayo surge el embrión de 242·C y las ganas de seguir adelante con este nuevo proyecto.
Aun es pronto para valorar en su justa medida lo que nos ofrecen Garlic soup pues en su directo presentaron sus únicos 7 temas mas una versión de Jimi Hendrix. Como la banda reconoce están en proceso de alcanzar aun su sonido, pero fue una buena manera de saber si su propuesta es del agrado del publico. Enfrentar sus canciones a la gente y ver si hacia donde van es el lugar correcto.
Empezaron con 242·C ya que fue la canción que dio inicio a todo. Y fue la mejor manera de empezar, en cuanto comienza intentas averiguar, a que suena y es un gran mérito no ver enseguida a que banda imitan o pretender sonar, algo habitual en las bandas nacionales. No te viene ningún grupo a la cabeza, y eso es positivo.
Adan Olmo es un bateria contundente e incisivo, Lyn el bajista es puro fuego, la gasolina que prende la mecha. Mario es un guitarrista versatil, el mas dotado tecnicamente de todos y Juan tiene una voz potente y personal.
Su musica suena a Blues, huele a Blues pero un Blues bastardo, estrangulado, retorcido y perverso.
Si fueran mas funk y serian una especie de Red hot Chili peppers de la epoca del Mother's Milk y si fueran mas Rockandroleros una especie de Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Si fueran mas sinfonicos serian unos hermanos pequeños de Mars Volta. y si exploraran la vertiente electronica-sinfonica unos Muse epoca "origyn of simmetry".
La clave de este tipo de música es que no hay reglas la locura reina, los músicos han de dejarse llevar, dejarse poseer por el espíritu de la música. Y aquí es donde fallan Garlic Soup, se quedan a medias, prometen pero no llegan a cumplir. Quizas sea su estado embrionario o que no todos están seguros del camino que llevan. O técnicamente no pueden.
En mi opinión, La base rítmica lastra un poco al conjunto, no se si debido al cansancio o a otros motivos. Y Mario necesita un apoyo rítmico o directamente otro par de brazos. Juan por su parte, debe dejar de ser tan lineal cantando y desarrollar una vertiente mas histrionica que ayude al grupo a dar ese paso adelante. Me Explico Mike Patton cantaba bien en el disco "The real Thing" pero era lineal, le faltaban matices… En "Angel Dust" y sobretodo en "King for a day" los encontró y puso al grupo en otro nivel.
"Pulse Alarm" y "Purple eyed girl" son las mejores composiciones del grupo, pero necesitan esa vuelta de tuerca que las haga explotar.
Quizas deberían indagar la senda electrónica que plantean en "Pocket full of sorrow" que sorprende en su planteamiento pero acaba lastrada por su larga duración. Es otra vía que debe explorar el grupo, le daría esos matices que necesitan. Son un cuadro en blanco y negro pero les falta dar el color, la cosa promete.
La versión de Jimi Hendrix, quedo deslucida por unos coros femeninos irritantes, que ahogan la voz principal, problemas de la mesa, y por una sensación de deja vu que fue sin duda lo peor de la noche.
Concluyendo Garlic Soup tienen futuro si todos creen en el proyecto, si dan todo lo que tienen dentro y sobretodo si buscan la manera de colorear un cuadro bonito pero inacabado. Quizas encerrarse y escuchar juntos discos de Pink Floyd como Ummagumma, Visionar el documental "I am trying to break your heart" de Wilco, entrar en el mundo de Tom Waits y su perversión del Blues en discos como "Real gone" o "Bone machine" les ayude a encontrar la salida del laberinto en el que andan.
