Si echamos la memoria atrás los últimos 30 años nos damos cuenta que las grandes estrellas de la música siempre han estado caracterizadas por etiquetas, por ejemplo: John Lennon el héroe de la clase media/baja, Kurt Cobain una especie de mártir de la sociedad, Ian Curtis un alma atormentada, etc.. pero cuando se habla de J. Mascis como lo etiquetarías? yo siempre le he tenido en la imagen del eterno adolescente, no se si será por su música despreocupada, libre de prejuicios o por su comportamiento que siempre ha tenido de personaje tímido y uraño características acordes con la edad del pavo. Lo que si hay que tener en cuenta es que el disco "I Bet on Sky" no sufre de esa inmadurez adolescente.
Los malos tiempos entre Mascis y Barlow también parece que hayan pasado a mejor vida han desaparecido esos tiros cruzados más propios de los hermanos Gallagher. Al no haber malos rollos el disco también lo ha agradecido, ha vuelto esa ligereza al componer que caracterizaron tan acertadamente a finales de los 80. Temas como "Watch the Corners" te hace sentir como si el rock alternativo todavía no se hubiera inventado, donde no existe Nirvana ni ningún otro grupo de los 90's, es un salto al pasado a las raíces mas profundas. El disco desprende genialidad por todos lados, la producción de todos los miembros de la banda es presente y la soltura que tienen los tres miembros de la banda es impropia de cuarentones que daban la sensación que iban a menos.
"I Bet on Sky" no da sobresaltos, todos los temas pisan sobre seguro y se alejan de aquellos sonidos extraños y ruidosos mas propios del rock noise y se acercan mas al rock alternativo. El disco da inicio con "Don’t Pretend You Didn’t Know" un tema pletórico y alegre al contrario que "See It On Your Side" el tema que despide el disco que sin dejar de ser pletórico nos deja un sabor de amarga tristeza, seis minutos de guitarreo constante con una voz melancólica donde solo J. Mascis es capaz de transmitir con credibilidad.
J. Mascis en este disco esta a un paso de su amado Neil Young y muy lejos de la gran mayoría de sus contemporáneos de su quinta, "contemporáneos" aquellos pocos que sobrevivieron a los nuevos tiempos y que solo dan coletazos de supervivencia alimentados por tiempos pasados. Al contrario que otros muchos de su generación, Dinosaur Jr han sabido envejezer con la cabeza alta y el espíritu joven, no se han vendido y si han hecho este disco es porque se sienten agusto estando juntos y no por necesidad.
Si necesitas que haya algún sitio donde la nostalgia por la música y épocas nunca vividas existan da las gracias a Dinosaur Jr por hacernos sentir ese momento con "I Bet on Sky". Este disco con sus canciones son el medio de transporte a ese lugar donde todas las cosas están bien hechas. Uno de los discos del año 2012.
