GRANT-LEE PHILLIPS
"NINETEENEIGHTIES"
Zoe
2006
FURS O ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN...
Album versions as indicated in its title, artist of the decade of the '80s and '90s. Where we find a Grant-Lee Phillips his voice brimming with honey and melancolismo similar to Ryan Adams but without being so dramatic to the public how Adams. In the fourth full-length Californian and we find exquisite special versions: Pixies, The Cure, Nick Cave, The Smiths, Joy Division, The Psychedelic Furs and Echo and the Bunnymen ... Of note in the record Grant-Lee Phillips takes care of almost all the instruments except the drums and violins.
With "Wave Of Mutilation" Pixies makes it a very Hawaiian adventure and summer thanks to the slide guitars, while songs like "City Of Refuge" by Nick Cave adds a more Bluesy and sung in Nick Cave plan Nick Cave to himself. "The Eternal" by Joy Division makes slow and agonizing than the original practically using an acoustic guitar, piano and harmonica. "I Often Dream Of Trains" by Robyn Hitchcock is the best cut of the album, but because the song is very good too and that helps mucho.como also happens with "Love My Way" by Psychedelic Furs.
But Phillips has the expertise in the entire album to flip it completely to songs, take them to their land melancholy, sad, gray and rainy and convert almost theirs.
And finally we have the dramatic version of "Last Night I Dream That Somebody Loved Me" by The Smiths that is infinitely superior to that of the late Jeff Buckley.
Many fans (which are very few of Phillips) wonder why we do not get the fame they deserve? A real shame, but I prefer to be a regular guy and stay in the underground so we can enjoy more.
