Todavía tengo en mis recuerdos la primera vez que escuché "Spin The Black Circle" de Pearl Jam por la radio, fue en el programa de Radio3 "De 4 a 3". El impacto que me produjo fue de tal intensidad que mi concepción por el grupo cambió para siempre. Anteriormente ya los habia escuchado en alguna ocasión pero muy por encima y sin prestarles practicamente ninguna atención, por aquel entonces mis sentidos no estaban lo suficientemente desarrollados para comprender a una banda con esencia Rockera, prefería música mas directa o simple como Nirvana.
El disco fué otra bomba de relojería, habían pasado 3 años de su disco debut "Ten" un disco lleno de himnos noventeros y 1 del "VS" su disco más furioso. "Vitalogy" es el punto intermedio de ambos discos, y también es donde como banda creativa llega a la cúspide más alta. Eddie Vedder comentó una vez que "el momento más alto de tu carrera también puede ser el más bajo de tu vida" y eso se notó mucho en ese año de 1994, las relaciones del grupo no eran buenas incluso se hablaba de la disolución y la vida personal de Eddie se truncó en un destino fatal con la muerte en Abril de ese año de Kurt Cobain. Toda la presión mediática cayó sobre ellos, Eddie no tuvo más remedio que recoger el testigo que había dejado Cobain de abanderado de una generación marcada por la X y de una década que musicalmente no tenia precedentes.
Con "Vitalogy" también llegamos a un punto donde Eddie Vedder ya no es el mismo que antes, puede ser la presión mediática, la muerte de Cobain u otras cosas que nunca sabremos ciertamente, se a especulado mucho sobre este tema de porque de ese cambio de actitud de la banda en los directos, de verlos desbocados saltando y subiéndose por los focos de los escenarios a no despegarse del micro sin moverse, el caso es que Eddie ya no nada por el mar de brazos y el disco lo demuestra, las guitarras son mucho más protagonistas, sonidos más del rock clasico y a la vez la sensación que la banda hace un disco para desmarcarse del movimiento "Grunge" tanto como de actitud como de música.
El álbum empieza con "Last Exit" un tema con muchas raíces rockeras, guitarreo y una batería que suena con intensidad y donde la voz de Eddie suena con contundencia al final de la canción, un tema perfecto para un disco con una clara intención la de volver al rock mas clásico. El tema siguiente "Spin The Black Circle" que se puede decir de este tema? pues es un tema donde revoluciona todo lo que puedas sentir en esos momentos, empieza con un riff sublime de Stone Gossard e instantáneamente al escucharla se convierte en un clásico, (pocas canciones pueden hacer eso), ritmos frenéticos, muchísima pasión, y donde la sudor de la banda la puedes notar en cada instante con la voz de Eddie que por momentos parece que se vaya a romper de tanta entrega. Simple y llanamente SUBLIME!! el tema le valió a la banda para el primer Grammy. "Not For You" es uno de mis temas preferidos del disco, un tema con un mensaje dirigido a todos aquellos que intentaron romper y aprovecharse de la banda para llevarse todo el dinero posible a costa de ellos. "Not For You" vuelve a la esencia rockera con un tono mas lento pero incluso más potente. Con "Tremor Christ" le toca el turno a Jeff Ament con un bajo en suspensión que hace que coja un color la canción de oscura. Una canción ambiciosa donde la banda se atreve incluso a romper moldes estilistas. Y llegamos a "Nothingman" posiblemente sea la canción por la que le tengo mas predilección a la banda, el mensaje que tiene es muy identificativo para toda esa gente que a perdido el amor de su vida, después de tantisimos años que llevo escuchándola aún me sigue estremeciendo llegando al punto de casi secarme los ojos. "Nothingman" te da una caricia y un abrazo después de haber escuchado Rock en estado puro, te enseña que desde el rock también hay sensibilidad. Pearl Jam me enseñó con "Black" y "Nothingman" que reinventó la forma de hacer baladas. Una joya. Después de tanta delicadeza con "Nothingman" suena "Whipping" y todo se evapora, volvemos de nuevo a esas raíces donde diria que Eddie Vedder le da por enseñarnos sus influencias con un tema que me recuerda a The Who con ese toque desenfrenado marca de los 90 y que solo Dave Abbruzzese sabe hacer, no como ahora con Matt Cameron que en los directos que le podido escuchar baja considerablemente la intensidad de la canción. No voy a entrar en el trapo de quien es mejor bateria o quien a sido el mejor batería de Pearl Jam pero reconozco mi predelicción por Dave Abbruzzese :-). "Pry,to" es una rara canción donde se oye a Vedder repetir "P-R-I-V-A-C-Y is priceless to me" mientras la banda va tocando notas, no se muy bien el sentido de este extracto. Después del minuto y medio que dura "Pry,to" emerge "Corduroy". Emocional, bella y en momentos devastadora. El tema empieza con una frase que siempre me ha llamado la atención y que puede tener varias lecturas "the waiting drove me mad" para mí hace referencia a ese mundo de fama y éxito y que rechaza la banda y sobretodo a la industria. Frases como "I would rather starve than eat your bread..." o "Can't buy what I want because it's free..." son un clarísimo ejemplo del transfondo de la canción. El disco sigue con "Bugs" otra extrañeza que me deja algo perplejo, tonos de armónica y acordeón con un Vedder recitando al estilo Bob Dylan. "Satan’s Bed" es un tema rocker sin más, con un estribillo fácil que engancha y nos hacemos la pregunta que donde esta ese momento tan deseado del disco que no llega, pues es justo ahora con "Betterman", la canción que abandera el disco, un nuevo himno para la colección y otra canción inmortal. (Existe la anécdota que esta canción fue sacada a última hora del "VS" porque uno de los productores tuvo la genialidad idea de decirle a Vedder que esta canción era un Hit, por lo que Vedder decidió guardarla en el armario), otro detalle más de las ansias que tenían de alejarse a todo lo que sonara a fama. Y nos vamos acercando al termino de esta obra maestra con "Aye Davanita" a mi me suena a exótica y espiritual, muy envolvente. "Inmortality" otro de mis temas preferidos no solo del disco, sino de toda su extensa discografía, un tema que acabó volviéndose himno gracias al día que decidieron tocarla como homenaje en un directo el mismo día que moría Cobain. "Inmortality" es el equilibrio de un disco donde encontramos a un Vedder mas íntimo y sereno, con unos sonidos de guitarras acústicos que son una delicia y otra guitarra que desgarra. Después de esta canción a uno le queda la sensación de tristeza y emoción a la vez. Y concluimos el disco con "Hey Foxymophandlemama" y de nuevo otra extrañeza con sonidos radiofónicos más propios de una banda de Rock Noise, personalmente nunca me gustó como se cierra el disco.
En definitiva un disco clásico entre los clásicos, un disco para comprender la evolución de la banda y la historia de los 90's, yo me pasado miles de horas escuchándolo desde que lo editaron por esos años 90's y jamás me cansará, ya es parte de mi, de como soy y como voy a ser en el futuro. Temas como "Nothingman e Inmortality" son capaces de meterse dentro de tí para siempre.
Mucha gente inclusive yo te dirá que el mejor disco es el "Ten" pero la autentica esencia de la banda la consiguieron con el "Vitalogy", por lo que si has llegado a este Blog y quieres conocerlos escúchate este disco antes que cualquier otro, seguro que no te arrepentirás.

Still I have in my memory the first time I heard "Spin The Black Circle" by Pearl Jam on the radio, was in the program Radio3 "De 4-3". The impact that I produced was of such intensity that my conception of the group changed forever. Previously I had heard on occasion but far above and without paying virtually no attention, at that time my senses were not developed enough to understand a band with Rockera essence, preferring more direct or simple music like Nirvana.
The album was another bomb, had spent three years of their debut album "Ten" an album full of anthems noventeros and 1 "VS" their most furious. "Vitalogy" is the midpoint of both discs, as well as a band is where creativity comes to the highest peak. Eddie Vedder once said that "the high point of your career can also be the lowest of your life" and it showed a lot in that year of 1994, the group's relations were not good even spoke of the dissolution and Eddie's personal life was cut short in a fatal death in April of that year of Kurt Cobain. All media pressure fell on them, Eddie had no choice but to pick up the baton that Cobain had left champion of a generation marked by the X and a decade musically was unprecedented.
With "Vitalogy" also reached a point where Eddie Vedder is no longer the same as before, can be media pressure, Cobain's death or other things we'll never know of course, is a lot of speculation about this issue because of the change attitude of the band in live performance, to see them jumping and climbing runaway by the lights from the stage to the micro peel not still, the fact is that Eddie no longer anything of the sea of arms and disc demonstrates, guitars are much more players, more classic rock sounds while the feeling that the band makes a record of the movement to get open "Grunge" attitude as much as music.
The album begins with "Last Exit" a topic with many roots rock, guitar playing and drums sounds with intensity and where Eddie's voice sounds forcefully at the end of the song, a perfect theme for a disc with a clear intention of return to more classic rock. The next topic "Spin The Black Circle" that can be said about this? it is an issue which revolutionizes everything you feel at the time, begins with a sublime riff of Stone Gossard and listen instantly becomes a classic, (few songs can do that), frenetic rhythms, lots of passion, and where sweat of the band can notice every moment with Eddie's voice that seems to go breaking of such dedication. Plain and simple SUBLIME! the subject earned the band for the first Grammy. "Not For You" is one of my favorite tracks on the disc, a song with a message to all those who tried to break and take advantage of the band to be much money as possible at their expense. "Not For You" again rocking the essence with a more slow but even more powerful. With "Tremor Christ" is his turn to Jeff Ament with low suspension that makes the song take a color of dark. An ambitious song where the band dares to break the mold even stylists. And we "Nothingman" possibly the song that I have more fondness for the band, the message is very identification for all those people who lost the love of his life, after so many years I've been listening to me yet still shaking to the point of almost dry my eyes. "Nothingman" gives you a pat and a hug after hearing Rock in its purest form, it teaches that since there are also rock sensibility. Pearl Jam taught me to "Black" and "Nothingman" that reinvented the way we do ballads. A gem. After so delicately with "Nothingman" sounds "Whipping" and everything evaporates, we return to those roots where Eddie Vedder would say it gives you for teaching his influences with a song that reminds me of The Who with a touch of unbridled brand 90 and only Dave Abbruzzese can do, not like now with Matt Cameron on you could hear direct considerably lower intensity of the song. I will not go into the cloth who is better battery or who has been the best drummer of Pearl Jam but I recognize my predelicción by Dave Abbruzzese :-). "Pry, To" is a rare song where Vedder is heard repeating "PRIVACY is priceless to me" while the band is playing notes, do not really know the meaning of this extract. After half minute-long "Pry, to" emerge "Corduroy". Emotional, beautiful and at times devastating. The track begins with a phrase that always caught my attention and you can have multiple readings "the waiting drove me mad" to me refers to the world of fame and success and rejecting the band and especially to industry. Phrases like "I would rather starve than eat your bread ..." or "Can not buy what I want Because It's free ..." are a clear example of the background of the song. The album continues with "Bugs" other strangeness that leaves me a bit puzzled, harmonica and accordion tones with reciting Vedder Bob Dylan style. "Satan's Bed" is a topic rocker no more, with a refrain easy engaging and we ask the question where is the time as desired disk that fails, as it is right now with "Betterman", the song that is leading the drive , a new anthem for the collection and one immortal song. (There is a story that this song was taken late on "VS" because one of the producers had the genius idea Vedder tell this song was a hit, so Vedder decided to keep it in the closet), another detail of the anxieties that had to move away to everything that smacked of fame. And we are approaching the end of this masterpiece with "Aye Davanita" to me sounds exotic and spiritual, very involving. "Immortality" one of my favorite subjects not only the album, but all his extensive discography, an issue that ended up turning anthem thank you decided to play it as a direct homage in the same day Cobain died. "Immortality" is the balance of a disc where Vedder found a more intimate and serene, with acoustic guitar sounds are delightful and another guitar that rips. After this song one is left with the feeling of sadness and emotion at a time. We conclude the album with "Hey Foxymophandlemama" and yet another surprise with radio sounds more typical of a rock band Noise personally never liked how close the disc.
Definitely an album classic among classics, a hard to understand the evolution of the band and the history of the 90's, I spent thousands of hours listening since I edited for those 90's and I never get tired, it's part of my , how I am and how I will be in the future. Tracks like "Nothingman and Immortality" are able to get inside you forever.Many people including myself will tell you that the best album is "Ten" but the true essence of the band got to "Vitalogy", so if you come to this blog and you know Listen to the album before anyone else, sure you will not regret.
