BEN OTTEWELL
"SHAPES & SHADOWS"
Ato
2011

*****

It is difficult to call Ben Ottewell an icon, as it is difficult to call a rock band Gomez toe. For those who still do not know, was the deep voice Ottewell of Gomez.
When I listen to this album again familiarme again in a voice that was an obsession for me in the distant past year 98. That was the year that Gomez released her debut album "Bring It On", and I loved it at the time, but honestly I have not heard anything else since. I remember the songs sung by Ben Ottewell, as a huge beast of a guttural voice, ravaged by a depth and seriousness in unusual songs.
Now my memory and I can not serve so well 14 years later, but his solo album seems less harsh voice, and something softer.
It is an album that is hard not to like anyone really. It is full of well-crafted songs, together are made with passion and care. He has a gift, the gift of a voice and latent melancholy amid the sounds that are not typical for a singer of Pop \ Rock. The songs are pretty decent, but I'd rather hear the voice Ottewell stunning with minimal accompaniment. Ironically, when he is closer to what I ask, is when the songs end.
Ottewell has demonstrated his skills as a composer in the past and his ability is not questionable. It is clear that he knows what he wants to do now, but what happens is that for this album casual "Shapes & Shadows" is not an album that has to prove his talent to the world. Arrangements would have preferred less and a little more power in the songs to make them not so soft and unlock its strong voice, a penalty, the disc would have been perfect and would have nailed it not be bound thereby. It was still one of the best albums of last year.
