 TAMARYN
"THE WAVES"
Mexican Music
2010

Last November marked the 20th anniversary of "Loveless" historic album My Bloody Valentine, a record that is perhaps the best representation of what is and has been the Shoegaze genre. The album's influence can be heard today, as strong as ever, in the music of bands like "Lotus Plaza", "A Place to Bury Strangers" or "Young Prisms". The aforementioned groups have taken the genre to new directions, incorporating synthesizers, pop, metal and even ambient and punk influences in music delicate but strong of the founders of the genre. However, if you are looking for an album so faithful Loveless style, or you might even be mistaken for a new My Bloody Valentine, look no further than "The Waves".
"Tamaryn" are joined by guitarist and producer John Rex Shelverton, While "The Waves" shows the beauty of Tamaryn ethereal voice, it would be foolish not to name Shelverton accolades for her work with instrumental fastastico. The first song of the album, begins with loud distorted guitars and a bass that explodes in a captivating blend of smoky vocals. Wonderful guitars are perfectly blended in and out by vocal lines without any time steal the spotlight, but remains captivating. The second song, "Choirs of Winter" showcases the duo dynamic variations, having a feeling decidedly slower. The guitars cry slowly behind the soft voices of Tamaryn, timid voices. "Sandstone" is the most shameless song on the album, around the lines of a low noisy, but it sounds so so good it makes you levitate. "Dawning" could be the most pop song on the album, with vocal melodies, extraodinariamentes safer than any other song. The album closes with "Mild Confusion", surely one of the best songs on the album, is based on a storm of pleasures."The Waves" will certainly have its detractors. While some may turn back by the sound imitated Bloddy My Valentine as unoriginal. But is that good Tamaryn's voice could come over time, with its smoky accent that does nothing but subtly whisper in the songs, to make them dreams! And though the songs have variation, the instrumental part of the album definitely follows the same pattern. It is also true that the Shoegaze genre is as unique as it very often does not need a change of style. The album, creates soundscapes worthy of the title of the album and the cover which incidentally I love.
20 years later, Shoegaze is alive and well, carried by torchbearers of a new generation. "The Waves" exists as a celebration of an album that changed music forever indie.
