Llega un momento en la vida de todo hombre que hay ciertas cosas imprescindibles que hay que hacer. Y una
de ellas es escuchar al menos una vez el álbum azul de Weezer. Realmente si miras hacia atrás en los años noventa, hay cientos de
bandas de rock alternativo, pero sólo unas pocas reunieron registros que se diferenciaron y tuvieron un
impacto cultural.
Es
muy raro encontrar un álbum debut tan influyente y exitoso como fue el lanzamiento
homónimo de Weezer (conocido como "The Blue Album" por los fans debido a
la portada del álbum en azul). Es
cierto que la calidad de este disco debut de la banda dio un nombre muy
conocido en la escena del rock alternativo.
El tema que abre el álbum es "My Name Is Jonas" se inicia con estilo, luciendo una intro acústica optimista. Sin embargo, esta es rápidamente sofocada por una lluvia de guitarras fuertes y distorsionadas, hasta que la canción termina suavemente con el mismo riff acústico.
La confirmación de la banda a la fama fueron los tres singles lanzados: "Undone - The Sweater Song", "Buddy Holly" y "Say It Aint So". "Say It Aint So", es una de las canciones más emotivas del álbum, El videoclip fue realizado también, pero esta no cumplió con la recepción abrumadora de las otras dos. En cambio los otros 2 singles arrasaron con sus videos. Cada una de estas canciones se ha convertido en un himno desde su lanzamiento. A mi personalmente, me encanta "Undone", aunque su video en realidad no me dice gran cosa, tiene esa sensación cómica como en muchos de sus clips.
El álbum azul es muy difícil de encontrarle fallos. El nivel de coherencia mantenida por Weezer en todo el álbum es notable. Ya sean contando historias de amor condenadas al fracaso como en "No One Else" o "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here". Siempre acompañadas con ganchos pegadizos de guitarra y letras inteligentes con voces armonizadas.
Sólo puedo describir el acabado del álbum con "Only In Dreams" como maravillosa y épica. Matt Sharp tiene un firme línea de bajo como la mayoría de las canciones, acompañada por una guitarra acústica y una guitarra eléctrica que acompañan fenomenal los versos. Sólo es interrumpida por lo que se ha convertido en una de las marcas de Weezer, el coro majestuoso que realizan siempre. Los últimos minutos de la canción se compone de un descenso de proporciones miticas, después de lo cual, cada instrumento se retira uno a uno, hasta que te quedas tu sólo el agudo bajo para calmar el disco suavemente a su fin .

Siempre habrá una polémica entre los seguidores sobre cual es el álbum más grande de Weezer. Sin
embargo, todo se reduce a una elección personal, yo amo el "Blue Album" y aunque el "Pinkerton" también es increíble creo que no tiene esa sensación de influencias como una banda prominente de Pixies o Nirvana. Por lo que es una seria tontería perder el tiempo discutiendo cual es el mejor, una cosa es clara y es que ambos álbumes ayudaron a definir la música de los
años 90.

There will always be a controversy among fans about which is the greatest album of Weezer. However,
it all comes down to personal choice, I love the "Blue Album" and
although the "Pinkerton" I think it is amazing is not that sense of
influence as a prominent band Pixies or Nirvana. So
it is a serious waste time arguing nonsense which is the best, one
thing is clear and that is that both albums helped define the music of
the 90s.
